Rest Not, Want MORE!

Though the woman in the photo is NOT me...she certainly resembles how I feel after this week. I'm sure you have those weeks where everything comes due at once, blog posts, deadlines, bills, appointments, classes...everything comes due but rest! That has been my week.

We just got home last weekend, from the beach. It was a glorious time that, was not by my doing but made possible by a dear sweet friend. I honestly don't know what I would do without this week each year. I start looking forward to it long before it arrives because I know that by the time it DOES arrive, I am ...well...spent. You've been there? Right?

It seems the older I get the less resilient I am. Change comes more frequently and certainly harder. Demands eat away at me until I think...is there any rest?

It rained while we were at the beach. It rained A LOT! Deluges. Buckets! Daily. But what I found so profound about the rain dates was God allowed our fun times to happen first and then the rain followed. To me, that spoke volumes. Fun, REST. Work (yes, I worked while I was at the beach too), REST.

As the rain fell so hard you could hardly see the houses across the way, I took in a deep breath and relaxed. Rain does so much more than just water the earth, the sound - even when it's loud - flips our ON button to the off position and allows us to take in the hum of...rest and relaxation. It opens our minds and allows us to decompress. It makes us...sleepy.

This has been a week of HARD, but right in the middle, as I was cleaning up my girls (my chickens - which, by the way,  make me ever so happy), it started to sprinkle. I barely got to the deck before the deluge hit and for a few minutes, I stood under the tarp over our pergola and watched. Tiny drips of rain seeped through the covering and landed on my face and all I could do was smile.

Despite the busyness of this week - despite the stress of waiting on tests for the prince, despite, despite, despite...there was a moment of rest.

I watched my grandson play ball today - I hardly uttered a word other than, Atta boy! My body was screaming "rest" but my heart was saying, one more inning. What a joy to watch our son on the field, being not only our son but an amazing father to his son. And I think, had it not been for the rocky road we once traveled with him, this moment would not be possible. I swallowed hard as my daughter-in-law hugged me and said, I love you. And those...are the moments we wait for because when I receive those, REST enters my heart.

As the day progressed another son texted me over and over...and I thought...God, you have blessed me that my children want to talk to me, they love me, they enjoy time with their dad and me. There was a time when my phone lay silent, now it chimes with laughter and fun. Sweet moments when my boy includes me in the “every day” from his home in another state. And then there is Chase...oh my, what a blessing and what a challenge. But he brings me tidbits of wisdom only found in the heart of a child with a disability.

I am blessed in so many ways. And when I am at my busiest, there are these moments of rest that make it all worthwhile.
