I am always amazed at the blessings God offers me. When I feel the most undeserving, He smiles on me and says, "You are worthy, my child." You are the blessing that God has offered me. To have readers who faithfully follow my work is just not something I ever, ever, anticipated. But then, here we are. So first and foremost...thank you. Thank you for reading my blog. If you know me, then you know I love the culture of the Appalachians. Born and raised here, it's part of my being. The stories of the Appalachians, especially in the 1800, were of the strength and resilience of the mountain people in an era when life was extremely hard. Their stories are hard but the life lessons and strength of faith were and still are amazing. 

What Momma Left Behind is the story of Worie Dresser, a young woman with dreams of being a teacher but living in a time on the mountain when "the fever" was taking the lives of thousands. For an explainable reason, more adults seemed to be dying than children. Though children died, just not to the number of their parents. Since medical records and doctors were far and few, only theories can be offered as to why more adults died. Some suggest the adage, "Children should be seen and not heard," probably saved many of the children, since they were sent to play in the barns and outside, rather than mingling with the adults. Possibly they were not as exposed. We know, when grave illness hit, children were sent away from the rooms and house where that illness lingered. Again, this is probably what saved many. Still, hundreds of children were left parent-less.

Worie Dresser is touched by the love her own mother showed these children and even when her mother died, she stepped up to continue to care for the orphaned children. What Momma Left Behind, stresses the importance of taking in the orphaned children and loving them. Offering them homes and families. Our country faces staggering numbers of orphaned children. What a wake up call to step up and bring these young ones out of the system and into homes where they can be loved and taught of a loving God.

Our family is fortunate to have a child, now in her early teens, that was adopted. What a joy she has been . . .what a blessing and wonderful addition she is to our family.
